Corporate Energy Transition Pathways Under the Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality Goals

On June 22, the “2021 Forum on High-Quality Energy Development,” jointly organized by the China Energy News and the China Institute for Energy Economics, was held in Beijing. Held at a time when China is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and marking the beginning of the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the conference was themed “Carrying Forward the Century-Old Red Legacy and Boosting Green Transformation and Development.” During the roundtable discussion session, various enterprises engaged in lively exchanges on current new technologies, emerging business models, and the opportunities and challenges facing businesses today.

Wu Linyong, Deputy General Manager of Longi Clean Energy: The Dual Carbon Goals Bring Both Opportunities and Challenges to New Energy Enterprises.

The goals of carbon neutrality and peaking carbon emissions are having a profound impact and driving significant changes in companies involved in the manufacturing and construction of new energy products.

First, enable enterprises to gain a renewed self-awareness. Under the dual-carbon goals, new energy sources—especially photovoltaics—will emerge as the primary power source, offering bright prospects for both industry and enterprise development.

Second, enterprises themselves bear significant responsibility. As photovoltaic power is set to become the primary power source in the future, how can we better support the development of a new-type power system? How can photovoltaic enterprises play their role on both the generation and consumption sides? These are pressing issues that urgently need to be addressed.

Third, we need to shift our perspective on how we approach these issues. In the past, we tended to focus primarily on the power generation side, pondering how to increase the share of clean energy. However, the dual-carbon goals now require us to think more from the “carbon” perspective, helping various regions and industries achieve decarbonization. This presents both opportunities and challenges.

We will develop solutions tailored to the specific characteristics of each region and industry. For example, in response to the diverse resource endowments and varying electricity and energy mix structures across different regions, we will promote region-specific solutions for photovoltaic environmental governance and ecological restoration. Furthermore, by integrating these solutions with production processes in other industries such as mining and chemical manufacturing, we will help them identify more effective decarbonization strategies.
